Zone 0: the first 5 feet

The area immediately next to a structure deserves the most detailed attention because small combustible materials can collect against siding, under steps, beside deck posts, and in corners. Truckee Fire currently calls for removing dead and dying vegetation and vegetative debris in this zone and limiting combustible items near structures.

From a cleanup standpoint, this often means careful hand work around the home, deck edges, stairs, planters, and other tight areas rather than broad mechanical clearing.

Zone 1: 5 to 30 feet

Zone 1 extends the maintained area beyond the immediate structure. Typical work includes removing dead plants and vegetative debris, reducing continuous brush, maintaining tree and shrub separation, and keeping annual grass managed. This is where brush clearing and targeted smaller-growth removal often become a larger part of the project.

Zone 2: 30 to 100 feet

Farther from the structure, the goal shifts toward reducing fuel continuity across the property. Truckee Fire currently describes spacing between shrubs and trees, mowing annual grass, and reducing accumulated duff. On larger lots, this area can be scoped in phases if the property has substantial surface debris or overgrowth.

How the zones affect estimating

A zone-based walk-through makes estimates clearer. Instead of asking for a generic cleanup, identify what needs to happen close to the house, what brush or small growth needs attention in the middle zone, and how much wider-lot cleanup you want completed.
